Hello. Welcome to Use waiyu. My name is Heather, and in this lesson, we shall be learning some English greetings.
Let's start with 'Hello'. This is often used in either context- formal or informal. You can say 'Hello' to your friend, or 'Hello' to a random person on the street.
'Good morning' is used any time between 12am and 12pm, like Guten Morgen in German, or Buonjourno in Italian. This can be used in either context- formal or informal, to a stranger or to a friend.
Sometimes in English, we answer questions with questions, such as with 'How do you do?'. It is often answered with 'How do you do?' in the formal context, otherwise you may say 'Very well, thank you' or 'Not very well, thank you'. No matter how 'we are doing' in English, we still say 'thank you' out of respect because the asker has taken the time to know how we are feeling.
'Good afternoon' is used from 12pm-3pm. Like with 'Hello' and 'Good morning' this can be used in either context- formal or informal, to a stranger or to a friend.
'Good evening' is used any time after 3pm, and is more often used in the formal context. For example, if you met your boss during the evening and he/she greeted you 'Good evening', you would say 'Good evening [name of your boss here]'. It is also used as a way of saying 'Goodbye' when you are departing, but I shall touch on that in a later lesson.
That is all for today's lesson. I hope you have enjoyed it and have learned from it. Good night.
In this lesson, we shall be learning various greetings. If there is anything in English you would like me to cover, please e-mail me:
